God Goggles

God Goggles is a concept that was developed by Jess Chambers.  Today, she told me to keep blogging so I thought I would go ahead and share some of her wisdom. 

I am sure that most of you have heard of beer goggles, but I bet few of you have heard of God goggles.  Obviously beer goggles refers to what happens to people at bars when they have too much to drink.  The judgement of these people are impaired so they begin to see people differently than they really are.  Typically people appear more attractive than they really are.

Well, God Goggles are actually the opposite of beer goggles.  If you put your God Goggles on you begin to see people as they really are.  You begin to see them the way God sees them.  Let me give a couple of examples so this will be clear. 

Think of a time when someone was rude to you or did something that made you really mad.  Your typical vision shows you a person who is a jerk, but if you put your God Goggles on you might see them as a broken person living in a fallen world that needs someone to pray for them or witness to them.

The opposite situation could be true as well.  Think of people that seemingly have everything together.  Your typical vision shows you perfection, but if you put your God Goggles on you might see them as broken people living in a fallen world that need prayer. 

Get the picture?  Essentially this is a way to re-frame the way you look at people in your life.

Jess first came up with this about 1 1/2 years ago in a small group bible study.  It came to her when she heard the song Billy’s got his Beer Goggles On, by Neal McCoy.  The week after she brought it up, I could not get it out of my mind.  People would do things that would typically make me mad and I would start to get mad.  Then I would I hear, “God Goggles.”  I would then let the anger go because I realized the person making me mad has issues just like I do.  I think it certainly was the Holy Spirit at work.

So give this idea a try.  When someone does something to wrong you this week remember to put your God Goggles on and see them as God sees them.  Pray for them and go on with your day.
